The dogs behind the wordmark, and why they retire as the best-loved staff.
The first cohort was never supposed to be famous. They were working dogs selected for olfactory precision, drive, and — most practically — a willingness to sit still at the end of a detection run. They got into this because their noses are exceptional. The merchandise is incidental.
Charlie is the one the wordmark is named after. A mixed-breed male, street-rescued at approximately eight months, identified during a shelter temperament evaluation as an outlier in scent discrimination tasks. He joined the programme at fourteen months and reached operational standard faster than any dog in the first cohort. He is not the most obedient dog on the team. He is arguably the smartest.
Sage came in through a different path — born in a structured breeding line, donated by a breeder in Tamil Nadu who'd read about the programme and reached out directly. Her precision is clinical. Where Charlie makes intuitive leaps, Sage works methodically. Together they bookend what a detection dog can look like.
The rest of the cohort have similarly varied origins: one came from airport security screening, one from a search-and-rescue volunteer programme, two from rescue centres. What they share is a nose that won't quit, and handlers who've spent more time studying canine cognition than most people spend studying anything. They retire when the research says so. Until then, they work, they eat well, and they occasionally destroy a cushion.
